Tips For Formating International Shipping Labels

Kenzi Alvarez

If you think shipping packages internationally is a hassle, you are not alone. Shipping with an international label can provide a struggle. Fortunately, this skill is something you can eventually get the hang of. Keep reading to learn more about placing and formatting integrated shipping labels so you never face shipping problems again at the post office.

International labels are tricky because each component has specific rules. If you break any of these rules, your package will not make it to the intended destination. Understanding these components will help you create better labels that always allow the package to get to where it needs to go.

1. Always Use the Recipient's Full Name

Do not try to use a nickname or only a first name when you ship internationally. If you use a fake name, a customs official or post office employee may have to take a second look at your package, ultimately reducing the likelihood it will end up where it needs to go. If the name on the package matches the name on the recipient's ID, it is more likely to arrive.

2. Get Around the Character Limits

Because shipping labels often have character limits, you may need to get creative while also remaining thorough. In order to get the entire street address on the label, ensure you have made simple changes, like turning "West" into "W."

3. Include the Province (or State)

If applicable, ensure you have included the province to which you are shipping the item. Some countries require information about the province for easy shipping. In the United States, the province is the state. Other states require the initials of the province or state include Australia, Canada, and Japan. Essentially, if somebody includes something in their address, it needs to be included on the shipping label. You may be tempted to leave off initials like "NSW," but it may refer to the province, like New South Wales.

4. Country Format Is Important

Shipping to a foreign country comes with some confusing rules, but one thing you should know is to write out the full name of the country you are shipping too. Never abbreviate. Next, make sure to bold it on your label and write it in all uppercase letters. The country should always be on the last line.

Finally, keep in mind that pre-printed shipping labels can save the day time and time again. Get in touch with a shipping label company to learn how you can ease the burden of making your own international shipping labels each time you need to send items out.
