Tiny Reads: Hobbies That Utilize Miniature Folding

Kenzi Alvarez

Miniature folding is a printing process that makes very tiny copies of the same printed material. Most of the time, these materials are meant to be folded up and placed in product boxes that are much too small to contain full-sized information leaflets. However, miniature folding has been used for many unusual hobbies, as the following illustrates.

Microscopic Print Under Jewelry Glass

You may have seen these somewhere: crosses, hearts, and antiquated baubles, all with microscopic print under jewelry glass. Making these special pieces of jewelry often involves miniature folding. The tiny print is imprinted on pieces of paper, and then the little pieces of paper are inserted under pieces of jewelry glass that have the ability to magnify what is written underneath the glass. There are also memento or hourglass tubes into which tiny printed scrolls are inserted. You can print, fold, and/or roll these bits of paper with quotes, poems, or verses before turning them into necklaces.

Full Manuscripts the Size of Your Thumbs

A collector craze involves tiny novels, which are really amazing. You can order entire manuscripts of books printed and miniature-folded into real, and very tiny, books. The "novel" idea is one which has many hobbyists and tiny book collectors scrambling to make their own and sell what they make to other collectors. The books are never more than an inch or so thick, barely the size of a large thumb, but they are quite fun to read, if you have a good magnifying glass.

Mini-Mags

Likewise, magazines by private publishers can also be made into "mini-mags"—magazines that are a little larger than folded miniature books, but still large enough to enjoy. These mini-mags look exactly like the full-sized versions, except that they contain fewer printed images and can fit directly in the change pocket of your pants. They also cost less than a full-size magazine, which is what makes them more attractive to those who do not want to spend full cover price for the full-size magazine.

Realistic Dollhouse Books

Finally, for the sake of all dollhouse collectors and builders, miniature folding can be used to make realistic dollhouse books. These books for "hobby houses" rarely contain more than a third of the text after which they are modeled, but they lend a very realistic feel to your dollhouse. They also blend well with many other miniature items you currently have in your dollhouse.
